The Nigeria Customs Service has again emphatically said that smuggling is not only hampering the economy or dangerous to the societal health but has been actually termed the mother of all crime.
The Deputy Comptroller(DC) and National Coordinator,CGC Strike force, Abdullahi Kirawa stated this during a public lecture organised by Trans quest Magazine in Lagos at the weekend.
According to Kirawa, ”let me say one thing about smuggling, if any member of the society is asked by you to list 10 out of the criminality you know, I am sure you will start writing arm robbery, kidnapping, rape and other things. It might come to a state where smuggling may not even be mentioned. But I will categorically say here that smuggling is the mother of all crime”
Explaining further, the strike force coordinator said: ”Smuggling is evil, smuggling is dangerous, smuggling is deadly. Why do I say so?”
On trying to give clear definition of smuggling Kirawa hinted: ”It is through smuggling that arms and ammunitions get into the country. It is through smuggling that illegal and illicit drugs get into the country. It is through smuggling too that adulterated products we use get into the country. A lot of vices are committed through smuggling”
While listing the possible effects of smuggling to the economy in particular and the society in general, the anti-smuggling warrior listed some of the harmful effects of smuggling to include: ”One, these arms and ammunitions that were illegally imported and smuggled into the country that these criminals use in perpetrating of their crime and the illicit drugs equally. This is one of the things that are becoming painful and dangerous to our health”
While pleading with the media to assist the agency in curbing this problem through aggressive media enlightening of the general public to desist from such illicit and dangerous business, the coordinator further pleaded:”I therefore want to use this medium to appeal to the members of the general public especially, the press now that we are all here, please go out there and enlightening members of the public on the danger and ills of engaging in smuggling”
He continued: ”smuggling is dangerous and we should ask those who engaged in to desist from doing that”
He however said that smuggling has practically destroyed the nation’s economy.
”It is through smuggling that our economy is battered. We must not agree to this”
The DC also called for aggressive enlightenment campaign against smugglers.
”I therefore enjoined all us to engage in public sensitisation against all the ills of smuggling”
Lamenting further on how these economic saboteurs have through this nefarious business destroyed the country and its economy, Kirawa said: ”It is through that our economy is being battered’
Looking at a country free from such smuggling and other criminal vices, the coordinator concluded: ”When we achieve a suppression of smuggling to a barest, the ripple effects of suppressing smuggling will be added to our economy,.to our individual and public at large will be enormous, thank you very much,” he added.
